Vojtěch Chytil (1896–1936), a painter, collector, and successful promoter of Chinese art, and the architect Bedřich Feuerstein (1892–1936) were among the artists and intellectuals who, in the period before the Second World War, created an inspiring environment for the debate on the ancient and contemporary art of China and Japan and for the collecting of Asian art. Chytil met Feuerstein in China in about 1929, and their friendship soon grew into joint educational and collecting activities.

Exhibitions of Asian art were popular with Czechoslovak audiences, prompting Chytil to make another trip to China around the turn of 1929 and buy more art. In 1929, he presented the newly acquired artworks in Prague and then, in 1931, in Prague and Pilsen. The exhibition of Chinese and Tibetan art, organized by the Mánes Association in 1931, resulted from Chytil’s collaboration with Feuerstein. Karel Dvořák, Emil Filla, and Otakar Novotný also contributed to creating the installation.

The show was divided into two parts: a section devoted to Buddhist art (represented by several anonymous artists) and a contemporary art section. In his introduction to the exhibition catalogue, Chytil said that the most prominent artists of the exhibition were Qi Bai-shi (1864-1957), Xiao Sun (1883-1944), and Chen Banding (1877-1970). This was the first time that Qi Bai-shi’s work was showcased in Czechoslovakia. He had 73 paintings at the exhibition, a significant portion of the 236 artworks on display there.  

The two Czech reprises were followed by further exhibitions in England. The first of them, Contemporary Chinese Art, took place in London’s Whitechapel Gallery from May 23 to July 22, 1933, and featured 86 paintings by Qi Bai-shi, which formed more than a third of the 253 artworks on display. One year later, the exhibition was reprised in the same gallery under the title Professor Chytil’s Collection of Modern Chinese Art. The comparison between the catalogues of the 1931 Prague exhibition and the exhibitions in London shows the difference in conception between these two projects. Although the introductory text to the Whitechapel exhibition was a variation on the introductions to the two sections of the Prague exhibition, the Whitechapel show had only one part with contemporary works showcased alongside the Buddhist paintings. A reviewer for The Times (May 30, 1933) pointed out that the collection also included old art and compared the painterly technique and vigorous brushstrokes in modern Chinese paintings to calligraphy. In emphasizing the presence of old Chinese masters in the exhibition and comparing Qi Bai-shi’s style to woodblock prints by the Japanese master Katsushika Hokusai, the reviewer clearly wanted to help viewers find orientation in the extensive set of contemporary Chinese art, offering references to artworks they may have been familiar with. In his view, Qi Bai-shi’s paintings were technically brilliant but also brimming with humour, just like the prints by Hokusai. It appears that after London, a part of the exhibition travelled to Bratislava and Vienna.

Chytil’s shows were the first to introduce contemporary Chinese art to European audiences. Although prominent European scholars widely discussed old Chinese art in various art journals, the artistic output of modern China was practically unknown in Europe. Chinese painting and, especially, ceramics were highly popular with collectors and represented one of the period’s aesthetic ideals. To date, Chytil’s exhibitions and collections have not received much attention. And yet, this Czech collector played a significant role in promoting modern Chinese art in Europe and beyond.
