The exhibition Czech Tradition in the 19th Century opened its doors shortly after the ratification of the Munich Agreement in October 1938. In its appeal to traditional cultural values, it offered support to the Czechoslovak public during the difficult period following the annexation of Sudetenland. The political events at the time naturally sparked revivalist efforts among artists and critics active on the Czechoslovak art scene at the end of the First Republic. In her text for the catalogue, Anna Masaryková explained the purpose of the exhibition: “The Mánes Society organized the exhibition Czech Tradition in the 19th Century so that our entire society would recognize and constantly remind itself of the inexhaustible sources of our ancestors’ artistic pursuits so that it would appreciate their courage and strength with which they created artistic treasures of eternal value.” [Masarykova 1938]

The Czech Tradition in the 19th Century was organized as the 33rd exhibition of the Mánes Fine Arts Association. In contrast to Mánes’s previous shows, most of the exhibits came from private collections rather than public museums and galleries, so the public was not familiar with them. Approximately 30 private lenders participated in the show; the most famous of them included Alice Masaryková, Jiří Voskovec, and Emil Filla. The exhibition represented 33 artists, showcasing 170 artworks, some of which were for sale. In terms of genre, the selection was quite diverse: there were landscapes by Antonín Mánes, Josef Navrátil, Adolf Kosárek, Julius Mařák, Antonín Chittussi, and Antonín Slavíček; portraits by Antonín Machek, František Tkadlík, Josef Navrátil, and Karel Purkyně; historical canvases by Josef Čermák and Václav Brožík; allegories by Vojtěch Hynais, Josef Mánes, Mikoláš Aleš; and other artworks. The bronze and plaster casts came from the only participating sculptor, Josef Václav Myslbek.

According to Lidové noviny, a few hundred visitors attended the opening. Václav Špála, the chairman of the Mánes committee at the time, gave the opening address. The show was open daily from 9 am to 4 pm on weekdays and from 9 am to 5 pm on Saturdays and Sundays. Due to the extraordinary interest that the show sparked, the ending was extended from January 15 to January 22, 1939. Lidové noviny reported that as of January 14, 1939, the attendance numbers amounted to 12,400. The most expensive work on sale, A. Chittussi's painting The Great Landscape, was offered for 93,000 CSK.

Three preserved photographs of the exhibition published in various periodicals give us an idea of what the installation in the Mánes Building looked like. In some places, smaller-sized works hung one above the other in three horizontal rows, while larger works had their own separate spaces. Some of the smaller exhibits were placed close together in elongated glass cases and mounted in white frames. The room captured in one of the photographs was divided by pillars carrying beams. 

In terms of the conception and the period covered by the exhibition, it is worth mentioning that the first similar retrospective of Czech art in the past hundred years took place in 1891 as part of the General Provincial Exhibition. Various retrospectives and anniversary exhibitions were also among the previous shows of the Mánes Association, including One Hundred Years of Czech Art (1930), Fifty Years of the National Theatre (1933), and the Fifty Years of Mánes Anniversary Exhibition (1937). The 1938 exhibition became a sequel to these shows. Compared to One Hundred Years of Czech Art, the 1938 exhibition was approximately three times smaller. The vast majority of loans in both shows came from private collections. In 1930, however, the exhibition also included young artists, whom we now consider the founders of modern Czech art. This was not the case with the 1938 exhibition, as it focused only on the 19th century. The show received mostly positive reviews. All the critics agreed that similar projects helped raise Czech national spirits. However, in his text for the magazine Zvon, Adolf Veselý complained about the under-representation of sculpture, which would have enriched the exhibition halls. An unknown reviewer for Národní listy questioned the selection of artworks, asking why the organizers omitted Tulka, Ženíšek, Schikaneder, Marold, Maixner, Liška, and Březina, whose works he considered more valuable than those of Havránek, Wachsmann, Knüpfer, Jenewein, and Lebeda. This reviewer also criticized the absence of sculptors Bílek and Levý. 

In 1938-1939, Mánes’s journal Volné směry published several articles related to the 1938 exhibition discussing the question of the “Czech character” in art. According to an anonymous reviewer, the exhibition showed the courage and strength of Czech artistic forebears during the national revival and shed light on their sources of inspiration. Concerning the “Czech character,” the reviewer writes: “This exhibition, too, gives us the irrefutable certainty, further bolstered by a look back to the time when our artistic work began a hundred years ago, that it is only the value of art that elevates artists to the status of true bearers of the national tradition. Czech character cannot be saved or prescribed through external, forced, and essentially non-artistic features.” [Anonymous author 1938] Another reviewer, on the other hand, criticized the selection of artworks. In his view, they were solitary pieces with no relationship to one another. Neither the works in themselves nor the installation and the catalogue explained what precisely was meant by the "Czech tradition."

Another article in Volné směry, an extensive essay by Emil Filla, addressed the question of Czech tradition in art originating on the Czech territory. In Filla’s view, the only period when Czech art reached true originality was the Late Gothic at the turn of the 15th century. After that, the tradition was lost and did not reemerge until the period of the National Revival. Unlike other countries, the Czech lands had always been a crossroads of diverse artistic trends. Yet, Czech art retained its distinct character. In the 19th century, says Filla, not all painters from Bohemia and Moravia were equally “Czech” in their style, whether they were active at home or abroad. He argues that “Czechness” is unmistakably present in Aleš, Mánes, and Myslbek, while in Navrátil, Purkyně, and Pinkas, it stays hidden under the layers of other contemporary styles. It is very difficult to see in Chittussi, Slavíček, Kosárek, and Lebeda. According to Filla, “Czechness” can only be found through feeling, just as one cannot distinguish Czech and non-Czech artists by rational analysis. “Czechness” has two poles: “A sense of intimacy and spirituality, felt and understood even in the small and the mundane, alternates with a monumental synthesizing perspective, unafraid even of external grandiosity.” [Filla 1938] The last significant view on the question of Czechness came from Václav Špála, who offered an interesting take on new art: “Even today’s modern art is accused of dependence on foreign trends and a lack of originality. We forget that we are more worldly now than the previous generations and that we co-create the art of our time and are therefore more involved in international events, which was not always the case before.” [Špála 1938] 

Volné směry also reprinted excerpts from F. X. Šalda’s lecture on the problem of nationality in art, delivered as part of the Mánes lecture series on May 27, 1903, and originally published in the 7th volume of Volné směry. This shows that the question of “Czechness” in art was topical and much discussed at the time. 

The significance of the show was primarily in its role as a moral encouragement in the period of oppression by Nazi Germany. In addition, it presented many artworks that had long been inaccessible to the public. And finally, it sparked a new discussion on “Czechness” in art, inspiring several insightful reflections in the press.
