The project Figures of Czech History introduced an innovative approach to Czech exhibition practice, adding a spiritual-political dimension to the presentation of the portrait genre by focusing on the luminaries of Czech history. Because the installation strictly followed the historical chronology of the persons depicted, old masters mingled with then contemporary artifacts regardless of date of origin and technique. Gothic sculpture was placed in discussion with paintings by Maxmilian Švabinský, while the academic portrait of Božena Němcová by Josef Hellich hung right next to Jan Štursa’s plastic vision of the writer. This analogical, interactive approach helped capture the transition between the person’s actual likeness and his or her imaginary portrait that was passed down through generations, creating a monumental vision of Czech history. According to the reviews, Mikoláš Aleš was the most successful in fulfilling this task – his historical paintings embodied the narratives of the historian František Palacký and thus became a symbol of the nation’s creativity.

To honour the Czechoslovak Republic’s jubilee anniversary, the organizers from the Mánes Association aimed to build on the earlier image series of prominent historical figures. They were inspired by the set of 87 late-eighteenth-century engravings by the Balzer family workshop depicting Czech scholars and artists, published in the pamphlet entitled 87 Abbildungen böhmischer und mährischer Gelehrten und Künstler. Further sources of inspiration included the statues designed for the Czech Slavín of the landowner Antonín Veith in Liběchov (never finished in its intended form) and the Pantheon at the National Museum. However, because of the political situation at the time, this historical continuity of the traditional Hall of Fame was interpreted as a manifestation of national pride. In 1938, a year filled with politically draining events, this showcase of prominent statesmen, national revivalists and cultural figures served as a reminder that difficult moments throughout Czech history did not entirely break the nation. In this context, the exhibition’s title was often changed in the media to Figures of Our History in order to evoke the idea of a state that had faced oppression from its mythical beginnings to the President Liberator (that is T. G. Masaryk), but still remained conscious of the strength of the tradition that gave it hope to overcome hardship.

To visualize the art-historical evolution of portraiture, the exhibition’s authors used drawings, paintings and particularly sculptures, which embodied the essence of artistic representation (from the Romanesque typological conception, via the fifteenth-century realism, the Baroque self-presentation all the way to modern imaginary portraits). In their comprehensive concept, the authors tried to call attention to local stylistic specificities but this did not work out due to the lack of comparative material. The Mánes members themselves admitted that their selection was improvised and did not meet their original intentions.

The exhibition design by Jaroslav Fragner was the most appreciated component of the show. The architect transformed the hall into a single space with side cubicles. The ceiling was masked by a suspended drapery, giving the interior of the glass building an intimate atmosphere. The entrance vestibule featured two symbols - a bust of the then president Edvard Beneš, who from his post overlooked the gallery of prominent figures of the past, and St. Wenceslas, the patron saint of the Czech lands. The Mánes Association aimed to stimulate the public’s historical consciousness by exhibiting originals, but in exceptional cases the organizers chose colored photographs of artworks (St. Wenceslas from the church of St. James near Kutná Hora, wall paintings from the rotunda of St. Catherine in Znojmo), reproductions of large paintings that they could not loan and plaster casts of architectural statues from the triforium of the St. Vitus cathedral and the Old Town Bridge Tower. In connection with the jubilee anniversary of the Czechoslovak Republic, the exhibition was a reminder of national wealth. Its focus on prominent figures made it more comprehensible to the general public than the concurrent Prague Baroque exhibition. Commentators at the time called for the preservation of this highly successful portrait gallery for the future, a request that was, to some measure, fulfilled one year later. In 1939, the Mánes Association published a book Postavy českých dějin v umění výtvarném (Figures of Czech History in Fine Arts), edited by Vladimír Novotný, accentuating the artistic value of the project, although during the exhibition, it was mostly perceived as an appeal to national consciousness. In reaction to the political situation, Mánes members argued that the exhibition sought to include historical figures who had traditionally been regarded as mostly negative players in Czech history (Albrecht of Vallenstein, Humprecht Czernin) and who, in public opinion, helped spread Catholic oppression following the Battle of White Mountain (Bohuslav Balbín). The redefining of the relationship toward prominent figures of the 17th century is particularly interesting in the context of the concurrent Prague Baroque exhibition, which offered a scholarly synthesis of this period, and the exhibition Czech Tradition in the 19th century, which focused on the local artistic legacy of the recent past.

Figures of Czech History was organized as part of the 10th congress of the Czechoslovak gymnastics organization Sokol and the celebrations of the jubilee anniversary of the founding of Czechoslovakia. The project had no systematic promotion campaign and yet it became an illustration of national resilience. “In this respect, the exhibition is a fitting response to all the foreign anti-Czechoslovak voices claiming that the Czech nation has no independent cultural traditions, and that it therefore lacks the right to political independence,” wrote the periodical Česká výzva (Czech Appeal) [Bernášek 1938, n. p.]. The Mánes Association was praised for the exhibition; the public was pleasantly surprised that this traditional pantheon of important figures in Czech history was prepared by an organization known for its progressive modernist exhibitions.
