Databáze uměleckých výstav v českých zemích 1820 – 1950

The Czech milieu was introduced to French sculpture in stages, beginning in 1902 with the Prague exhibition of Auguste Rodin's work. Although the show was a success, it took a long time for the broader public to fully appreciate French sculpture. However, exhibitions organized by the Mánes Association gradually prepared Czech audiences for the 1935 retrospective overview entitled Modern French Sculpture. The choice of artworks for this show was didactic, allowing viewers to grasp the formal shift that took place between Auguste Rodin and the younger generation of sculptors. Rodin's Romantic-Baroque fusion was presented as an antithesis to the sensuous oeuvre of Aristide Maillol. The exhibition thus significantly contributed to the intellectual debate about the status and evolution of French sculpture.

The stylistic shift as presented at the exhibition was centred around proportions. Auguste Rodin extricated himself from the traditional academic canon to embrace naturalism; his tense, restless figures assumed epic proportions. His student Émile-Antoine Bourdelle arrived at decorative stylization. The static charm of built-up volume later peaked in the oeuvre of Aristide Maillol, who simplified form to spherical and cylindrical shapes. Maillol's approach to matter corresponded with Cézanne's achievements in painting. Such a comparison was not random – it stemmed from one of the exhibition's goals, namely to present the creative intervention of painting into sculpture. In addition to Edgar Degas, Auguste Renoire, Paul Gauguin and Pablo Picasso, who employed sculpture to materialize the sculptural aspect of their painterly work, the show primarily featured  works by Henri Laurens, Jacques Lipchitz and Ossip Zadkine, all of whom built on Cubism, giving sculpture a new dimension of bodily distortion. For the then-contemporary viewers, understanding this creative continuity gave the exhibition's content a new relevance. Another, antithetical line of interpretation within the exhibition focused on Charles Despiau's students, reaching into the sphere of academic sculpture. In terms of conception, then, this was an official selection that aimed to present the development of French sculpture in its entirety. 

The Modern French Sculpture exhibition was organized upon the initiative of the press service at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, whose director Eduard Purghart also served as the exhibition's secretary general for the Czechoslovak side. To help with the preparations, Purghart invited art historians Vojtěch Volavka, the author of the exhibition's catalogue, and Jaromír Pečírka, who subsequently wrote a book on French sculpture as an outgrowth of the exhibition. Based on mutual agreement with L'Association française d'expansion et d'échanges artistiques, the organizers assembled a touring collection of French sculpture, from Auguste Rodin to contemporary sculptors, to be presented successively in Warsaw, Prague and finally in Vienna. However, for financial reasons, only the Prague show was held. This made the organizers all the more eager to meet the principles of First-Republic nationalism emphasizing Slavic tradition and French values (freedom of thought, artistic modernity and cultural selfdetermination). The fact that the show took place in the gardens around the Belvedere royal summer palace, which had recently housed the exhibition of the Croatian artist Ivan Meštrovič (1933), enhanced the event's international political importance.

The exhibition was interwoven with references to the Czech milieu. It showcased artworks from Czech collections as well as Bourdelle's design for the Czechoslovak revolutionary medal, thus emphasizing the importance of Czech-French cultural relations. The conscious continuity with the tradition of Prague exhibitions focusing on French sculpture (Auguste Rodin 1902, Émile-Antoine Bourdelle 1909, French Art of the Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries 1923, Edgar Degas 1926 and The Art of Contemporary France 1931) was reflected in the words of Claude Roger-Marx, one of the French commissaries, who said that Prague “not only desired such an exhibition, but also deserved it” [Claude Roger-Marx 1935, p. 5].

The 1935 show was a stimulus for buyers. Following the generous state purchase of French artworks in 1923, the Modern Gallery's board of trustees strove to acquire further prominent sculptures. In 1935, the gallery bought the bronzes Head of a Young Girl by Henri Laurens and Portrait of G. Mahler by Auguste Rodin. A portion of the exhibition’s profits went to the purchase of Charles Despiau's Torso, amply reproduced in the press at the time. After the exhibition, Oskar Federer, the general director of Vítkovice steel works, purchased the sculpture Girl with a Jug by Joseph Bernard, now in the collections of the National Gallery Prague. As a symbol of the existing Czech-French relations, it was planned to acquire the plaster version of Rodin's Balzac for the Czechoslovak collection. However, Musée Rodin’s director, Georges Grappe, opposed the purchase, citing the plaster cast's immense value for the French culture. To compensate for the disappointment on the Czech side, a new cast of Balzac was created and sent to Prague; the funds for the purchase came from the Friends of the Modern Gallery Association. The organizers also received the sculpture Barbey dʼAurevilly as a gift from the French. By acquiring the monumental likeness of Balzac in which “Rodin's plastic genius culminates in the absolute sculptural form that makes us recall Michelangelo in his greatness and Donatello in the fiendish pace of his expression” [Volavka 1935, p. 7], the Modern Gallery gained a conceptual and historical centrepiece.
